In podiatric practice, we frequently encounter various skin and nail changes caused by bacteria. One of these bacteria is Pseudomonas aeruginosa – an environmental germ that can become a real problem under certain conditions.

What is Pseudomonas?
Pseudomonas is a type of bacteria that thrives in moist environments. It is commonly found in water, soil, and even on the skin. Under normal circumstances, this bacterium is harmless however, when the skin or nail becomes damaged or softened, it can cause infections, especially on the feet or toenails.
Typical entry points:
Small cuts or cracks in the skin
Softened skin (e.g. due to wet shoes or adhesive plasters)
Artificial nails or gel overlays
How to recognize a Pseudomonas infection
Typical signs include:
Greenish-blue discoloration of the nail or surrounding skin
Sweet, foul odor
Occasional pain or redness
These symptoms are characteristic and should not be ignored.
How does an infection develop?
The main cause is moisture combined with poor ventilation. People who are particularly at risk include those who:
Wear gel nails or nail polish
Experience excessive foot perspiration
Wear tight or non-breathable shoes
Have a weakened immune system
What can be done?
Podological treatment:
Removal of affected material (e.g. gel, nail residue, callus)
Professional cleaning and disinfection
Referral to a physician if deeper infection is suspected
At home:
Wash feet thoroughly and dry them well
Air out shoes regularly
Choose breathable materials
Avoid nail polish or gel until the infection has healed
👉 Important: Avoid moisture, Pseudomonas loves wet environments
Our tip
Maintain good foot hygiene, keep the spaces between the toes dry, and have any discoloration or unusual odors checked early by a professional.
Your feet carry you through life, give them the care they deserve.
